Laser Paint Removal
Laser paint removal is an environmentally friendly process used to remove paint layers from metal surfaces without damaging the substrate. It’s also known as laser coating removal and de-coating. The process can be applied to any metals, although the most typical are steel, aluminum and copper.
How does laser paint removal work?
When the paint film absorbs the laser and is alternately heated, it emits acoustic waves to the surrounding area due to the acousto-optic effect, and the acoustic wave energy is only a part of the laser energy. The photo-acoustic wave generated on the surface of the paint film is equivalent to an acoustic wave source emitting acoustic waves outwards. The acoustic wave that enters the paint film reaches the surface of the object under the paint film and then reflects back, because the acoustic wave thus generated has a large amplitude and good coherence, so the reflected acoustic wave and the incident acoustic wave will interfere, thus multiplying the vibration of some places, and it is as if the paint film has produced a micro-force explosion, which turns the paint into an extremely tiny dust and removes it.
There are two types of laser equipment that can be used for paint removal work, continuous laser cleaners and pulsed laser cleaners. Pulsed laser cleaning machine is an emerging laser equipment for paint removal, which is characterized by fast paint removal efficiency, small thermal influence on the substrate and no damage to the substrate.
How does pulse laser cleaning machine work for paint removal?
In the laser paint removal process, the laser acts on the paint coating, the paint coating absorbs the laser energy in the pulse time and converts it into heat so that the temperature of the paint reaches its vaporization temperature in a very short time, the paint coating is peeled off from the surface of the substrate by the laser, because the laser will have a very strong vibration during the cleaning process, under this high intensity vibration, the peeled off paint will be shattered, which will make the paint be removed.
The process of high power pulsed laser cleaning is dependent on the characteristics of the light pulses generated by the fiber laser and is based on a photophysical reaction formed by the interaction between the high-intensity light beam, the short-pulsed laser and the contaminated layer. The physical principles can be summarized as follows:
- The beam emitted by the laser is absorbed by the contaminated layer on the surface to be treated;
- The absorption of large energy to form a rapidly expanding plasma (highly ionized unstable gas), resulting in shock waves;
- The shock wave causes the contaminants to fragment and be removed;
- The width of the light pulse must be short enough to avoid the heat build-up that destroys the treated surface;
